When it comes to sexy, naturally beautiful eyes, the lashes have it all. If you don't believe me, trying going sans eye makeup for a day. Now, try it with and without just a little bit of mascara. Just adding mascara and bringing out the eyelashes fullness and length adds a TON to your eyes. Eyelashes make your eyes pop, and long, full and luscious lashes are the envy of all.

So much so that a new product which was FDA approved previously only for medical eye use, was recently approved for prescription to patients desiring longer, fuller eyelashes. Yep, this little cash cow was found to actually make the lashes grow in patients that were using it for it's intended purpose, and this spawned another, albeit, cosmetic, use for the product and lo and behold, it's selling like hotcakes to women wanting those long, sexy lashes.

However, as you can probably imagine, it's not cheap, and it does require a prescription. It also can have some potentially off-putting side effects that may affect your eyesight, which has left some scratching their head as to whether the eyelash growth is really worth it.

I can tell you that even if you have puny, small, short lashes, you can first of all, help them to grow by doing a few things, and you can also fake it by using techniques and certain cosmetic products to really add the most length and fullness that you can, without using prescribed medications, or resorting to eyelash enhancing implants - yes, there is such a thing, although it's a fairly rare elective procedure.

My first rule to keeping my lashes healthy and plentiful, and full, is to use a conditioning treatment on them every night after washing my face or every other night. Every night of course yields better results, but you be the judge of how it fits into your schedule. I say that like it's a lot of work, and it's not, most eyelash conditioning treatments come in a tube with a mascara like wand, so it's as easy as sweeping the conditioning treatment on your upper and lower lashes and heading to bed. Sometimes I forget though, to be honest.

Be patient with this, as it may take a couple of weeks for you to notice a difference in your lashes, but it really does help control falling out of lashes and it helps to enhance their appearance and encourage healthy growth. You can get many of these for as few as a couple bucks, and they last you a while, several weeks for me.

My second rule to long, growth-friendly lashes is to NEVER go to bed with mascara on. This is especially a no-no if you toss and turn a lot in your sleep. Mascara makes your lashes brittle, and if you move around a lot at night, and smash your lashes while they're brittle, they can break right off. This is also a great reason to use a conditioner at night too, it helps reduce the threat of breakage.

Now, let's talk about the right mascara. I always buy black mascara. Nothing else will enhance your lashes like dark, pure black. I have tried lighter blacks or fancy grey-blacks or charcoals, or even brown, but they don't magnify nearly as well as black.

It's also important to pick a mascara with an ultra fine brush. If the brush is not fine, it doesn't separate and elongate the lashes enough. A fine, many-bristled brush that is fairly soft will help to separate the lashes as you are working your way up their shaft, but it will also help to elongate them because it encourages the mascara all the way up the tip of the lash, making it "build on itself" and create longer length.

I particularly like mascaras that advertise as lengthening and contain polymers to help build the fullness and length you are looking for. My favorite brand is actually a drug store brand that is well known, but for purposes of neutrality, I won't mention it here. Suffice it to say, their mascaras are all under ten bucks a tube and usually come in a gold container.

Now, this is also very important. You MUST make sure you replace your mascara once every two months or so, especially if you use it every day. You don't even realize it, but your mascara dries out, and it can dry out your lashes, and not be as effective at lengthening as it dries out. It also can flake off a lot easier, and clumps a lot more, making your eyelashes look like tarantulas. It is well worth it to drop the ten bucks or under every two months and make sure you are getting the best performance from your product.

To encourage long, separated and full lashes, the way you apply your chosen product is also important. If the brush is clumped with old mascara, then wipe it off with a cotton ball or a little wad of tissue, then re-dip it into the container and get more on the wand. This helps prevent clumping on the lash and also encourages length and separation, making them more defined, opening up the eyes more and creating that natural, lush, sexy look we all like to get when applying makeup.
